Shedding Your Identity

Shedding Your Identity

Throughout this marking period, we have been discussing issues around identity and invisibility. One of our essential questions for this unit is "How do we overcome alienation and embrace and assert our individual identities?" In Invisible Man, we are faced with a character struggling with his identity. Keeping all of this in mind, please post a response to the following question:

How hard is it to vanish, today, in the digital age?

50 word minimum

I think that it is really hard to become invisible or vanish in todays society. If you want to become invisible it would be hard with the new technology and social networks on the internet. It would be difficult to be able to thrive and succeed in the community without the technology. If you wanted to vanish in todays society you would not be able to be photographed because the next day it could appear on someone's social network. Today most things are communicated easily through pictures, the internet, and cell phones. I feel as though no one can really vanish or alienate themselves in todays society unless they really want to.

Tell me, who are you?

Last week, we read about and discussed Ellison's pilot, Todd, who was struggling with a number of issues, most notably his identity. One of the Essential Questions for this marking period is How do we overcome alienation and embrace and assert our individual identities?

How would you define the term
identity? What do we mean when we talk about this concept?

50 word minimum and an image to represent your thoughts.

Identity is how you view and see yourself. Everyone has their own identity and for some it is easier to see and recognize. When we don't know our own identity we can sometimes feel alienated. We overcome alienation by finding out who were our. With our own identity we are stronger individuals. I think that we need to be able to embrace our own individual identities in order to overcome the feeling of alienation.

Reading for Meaning- Poetry

Today we're going to take a look at 2 poems, but before we do, we should take some time to talk about how we read poetry. Here's my question:

How is "reading for meaning" with poetry different than it is with short stories or novels? What types of things should we look for when we read poetry?

Write 30-words in a blog post of your own--feel free to make a list of things to look for when reading poetry for meaning.

It is different than short stories and novels because they tend to be shorter. In poetry you need to look for a lot of different symbols. Since poems tend to be shorter the poets usually try to put as many symbols as they can in their poem. You need to also look for metaphors and similes. There is constant feeling throughout the poem with the use of different combinations of words. You also need to focus on the rhythm and rhyme of the poem.

Previewing the 'Great Gatsby'

I expect to read about the things that Gatsby has done. I think that it is titled the Great Gatsby because in the book the main character does great things. I think that it is a masterpiece because of the language used and the uniqueness of the book. Gatsby in the book is one of the main characters. In the book I feel as though we will see a lot of Gatsby and the things that he does to make him great. I think the book will show the contrast between different social statuses. In the 1920's they had a very relaxed life style that will show in the book. I think that since the 1920's was so carefree up until the Great Depression that the reason that it is not politacally correct is because the 1920s was not that way. I think that this book has events or feelings that happened in his life. I also think that since there are no comforting or fashionable messages and it does not reveal how to solve problems of life it is connected to the feelings that Fitzgerald had about his own life.

Hills like white elephants (gift I didnt want)

I have received a gift i didn't want. I was in kindergarten and this girl named Fat Head Jasmine bought me a book I already had. It was a Barney book that I had hated when my mom got it for me. I was really upset because I did not like the book and I had already had it. When I was little I was a mean kid. I yelled at her for buying it for me when I already had it. I told her it was a dumb present and I didn't want it. I gave it back to her. She cried at my birthday party and I got in trouble for being inconsiderate to her and I had to keep the book anyway.

Hills like White Elephants

I think that this story, Hills Like White Elephants, is about a girl who is pregnant. The hills represent her sexuality. I think that she is trying to decide weather or not to keep the child. I feel like the man and the girl are young and the child is causing them stress in their relationship. I think this because when they are talking about the operation he says that after it they will be fine just like they were before. When they are talking about the operation i think they are talking about an abortion. I think that the guy is worried about the girl going through with this decision, knowing that it can not be changed once it is done.

What impact Do I want to have on the world Around Me?

I want to have a big impact on my family and society. I want to be the first one in my family to graduate a four year college. I want to be able to help my family financially as my parents get older and retire, and be able to be a positive role model for my younger cousins. I want to give back to my community when I get older. I want to volunteer and help out at community events. I want to be known in my community and not just there.

Who Do I want to become?

After I graduate high school I want to help children. However, I do not want to be a teacher or a pediatrician. I want to major in psychology and minor in art. I want to become an art therapist. I want to eventually have my own practice. I feel as though art is a major way of expressing yourself and the way that you are feeling. Art has impacted me in a major way throughout my life and I feel as though it will help others also. I want to help children that have had a hard or tough life.
